Calm Waters

February 10, 2015

When one thinks about a trip, be it a long, short, nearby or overseas, immediately you think in three basic items: Budget, itinerary/means of transportation and time.

But once we take enough courage and decide to go on a trip, our body also starts to generate a fair amount of adrenaline and unavoidably we begin to feel a state of permanent anxiety. Since we cannot continue  with this state of mind along our everyday life, we need to search for a way to channelize this, be it with maps, planning routes, looking at pictures of places to visit, read travelblogs, travel related websites, see videos, movies, read books or even magazines.

There cames a time when this is part of your everyday activities, and you check where your travel blog writers are, or wanna read an article you saw on a new magazine, and with this medicinal daily dosis, you are able to relax, although not so much.

From day 1 we started to individually follow travel blogs, talk among us two and share things we saw, read, also became Friends and acquaintances of other travelers and began to share this as well. We chose mainly to read Spanish or Portuguese written blogs, since most of them face the same route we planned to follow. We found from the most wild to the most easy going and from the high budget 4x4 trucks fully equipped to those that travel hitch hiking or even on a bicycle. All of these readings helped us a lot, not only to calm the anxiety mentioned before, but also to design, think and put together our own travel blog, but lastly it also motivated us much to think we became part of something bigger than our trip.

We learned that a “big trip” is achievable and that nothing can come in between your trip and you, as long as you have the will, and besides budget, designed plan, time or even resources, as long as you truly want to make it happen, and have the courage to follow through, it will happen…

As the idea is to share, not only among us, but with our community of readers, we wanted to share with you some of our sources of inspiration, starting with some chosen travel blogs:

While Joaquín and Julián inspire us with their pictures and videos, with their dreams and eternal courage, we know that we cannot all be surfers that challenge the Ocean at unexplored places, and Aniko’s and Laura’s, (La Nena as she is known on the www) blogs encourage us to a way of travelling and not being simple tourists but follow them on their adventures and unique experiences in places that many times we did not even know existed! Fabio and Andira have a very different travel blog, following them, you follow a rock&roll young couple (as they describe themselves) who is not after fairy tales, but of the “B-side” of travelling. These couple is not about visiting museums or famous monuments, instead trying the local beer, listening to local rock bands, talking about taboo travel issues (sex in public places, flirting travelers and many more “bar talk”.

The last to blogs we recommend are those we get most inspired by, on one hand, Alvaro, known as the Cicloclown, travelling now for ten years, has been on the five continents and over 64 countries, but that is not it: with the mare purpose of creating smiles along the way.  An idealist that inspires from his pictures and amazing stories. The Zapp family, composed at the head by Herman and Candelaria, have a Project known as “Catch your Dream” and travelling along their four children since the year 2000, they challenge anyone that has ever dared to put a limit to your dream: they began their trip with very little savings, in a 1928 car, had four children while traveling (yes, 4!!!) are true dreamers and fifteen years later, they keep dreaming.

When we have had it with Reading and want to see a movie, we have a long list of “all time favorites”, but we will shorten it to the top seven.  Those seven that after you watch it you are fully inspired to keep moving, travelling.

We won’t tell you what the movies are about, better you watch them yourselves. What we will do, (well Gonza is the one that did this actually), is leaving them our favorite phrases of the movies and also name the places inspired to visit by each movie.

Tracks. (2013) Phrase: “The universe gave us three things to make life bearable: hope, jokes, and dogs. But the greatest of these was dogs” Place: Australia

Into the Wild. (2007) Phrase: “Happiness only real when shared”… This movie has a ton of wonderful phrases! Place: Northwest USA, Alaska.

Historias Mínimas (2002) “Animals understand?”. Patagonian steppe.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” Iceland, New York, Himalayas.

Caballos Salvajes (1995) “El hombre arriesga su vida cada vez que elige y eso lo hace libre”. (“Men risk his life every time they choose and that makes him free”) La Pampa, Patagonia.

Midnight in Paris (2011) “Nostalgia is denial, denial of de painful present” Place: Paris.

The Beach (2000) ”And me? I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it's not some place you can look for. Because it's not where you go. It's how you feel for a moment in your life when you're a part of something. And if you find that moment... It lasts forever“ Thailand.

Well, here it is.

You now have a list of some blogs and movies to keep yourselves busy, to dream, to see not only that dreaming is possible, but also how far dreams can take you. We wish you much inspiration!
